Weleda White Mallow Baby Derma Skincare
Date: July 15, 2014
We asked Gentle Parenting’s Kate and her 15 month old son to test the new White Mallow Baby Derma range from Weleda, here’s what she thought:
My son is 15 months old and I have always ensured I use skincare and bath products that are “free from nasties” (parabens, SLS etc.). Whilst I have used Weleda Calendula skincare and bath products in the past, just recently I have rotated various other products that he had been bought for his birthday.
About four months ago my son developed very dry skin patches on his arms and legs. They didn’t seem to itch or bother him, but they looked ‘ashy’ against his dark mixed race skin (his father is of Jamaican/Cuban heritage). I tried using a few different products on these dry patches every day, including pure organic coconut oil, but nothing seemed to hydrate well enough to stop the skin flaking and looking dry and I was toying with the idea of going to see our GP and using a more medical steroid based product.
I was delighted to be offered the opportunity to try Weleda’s new White Mallow Derma baby range and immediately decided to stop using all other products to enable me to write a fair review.
I like the fact that the White Mallow Derma range contains coconut oil which is a staple in our household as it’s so versatile! Firstly I used the Nappy Cream on my son for every nappy change. The cream has a good consistency and is easy to apply, although I think a screw top is a little impractical when dealing with a wriggly toddler! The cream lasted well and acted as a good barrier between nappy changes as it was not absorbed too much into the skin or the fabric of the nappy. The tube size is good to travel with but I think a larger tube would be useful to keep at home.
Secondly, I used the Face Cream on my son after his morning face wash. It came in a tube similar to the Nappy Cream with a screw top. It has a very nice and light consistency, is easily absorbed into the skin without any greasy or oily residue and is fragrance free but naturally has it’s own faint and delicate aroma which is surprisingly pleasant. I do personally prefer the smell of the Calendula lotion but I will definitely be using this as daily moisturiser on myself too!
I used the Body Lotion on my little boy’s skin for his nightly after-bath massage and paid particular attention working the cream into the dry skin patches on his arms and legs. This cream was easy to apply in a large flip top bottle and again has such a lovely consistency; light but not runny and thick enough to give good coverage yet not too greasy or oily. After a week of using once, sometimes twice a day, I can honestly say that my son’s dry skin patches have completely cleared up! I was very surprised it worked so quickly and I’m so glad I had found something I can use long term that is natural, kind to his skin and leaves it well hydrated and supple.
I cannot recommend this range highly enough for babies and children with dry skin and particularly for mixed race or black skins as it’s absorbed so well. It is a little pricier than some other brands on the market, but it’s definitely worth every penny!
The Weleda White Mallow Baby Derma ranges contains a body lotion, nappy change cream and face cream, prices vary between £8.95 and £11.95. It can be purchased from the Weleda website.
