Storchenwiege Ring Sling
Date: July 29, 2014
We asked GentleParenting Review Panel member Julie, and her 6 month old baby, to test and review the Storchenwiege Ring Sling. Here are her thoughts:
As a relative newbie to babywearing, and having never tried a ring sling before, I was eager to get started when the Storchenwiege ring sling arrived (in a beautiful colour called Leo Turkis). So eager in fact, I didn’t read the instructions properly and got frustrated when I couldn’t get it to work!
Taking a bit of time to read the instructions (or even better, watch them on YouTube) and prepare your ring sling for carrying will pay dividends in the long run. Once I’d got to grips with lacing the fabric through the rings and fanning out the material it was really easy to pop baby in and out. Conveniently, Storchenwiege have given each edge of the material a different colour which helps immensely when tightening once baby is in place and ensuring you haven’t managed to twist it behind you somehow.
It took a few outings and repositioning on occasions to get the material spread out so wearing my (rather massive 24lb 6 month old) baby was comfortable, but he was seemingly very comfortable and certainly very happy and content from the word go so a definite thumbs up from him. He even fell asleep on our most recent excursion up Coombe Hill (pictured) and the ring sling made our ascent much easier than if he had been in his pushchair – and also doubled as a little blanket to lay him on we get to the top!
I didn’t breastfeed whilst using the sling as the opportunity didn’t arise but the instructions make it look simple and easy (which would have been a godsend when he was a newborn limpet!) The fabric is soft but sturdy and the tummy to tummy position looks ideal for younger babies. Because of the ease in which you can pop the baby in and out, this ring sling would be ideal for the school run.
